What is Propylene De Glycol ?
Sep 07, 2023
Propylene de glycol has good viscosity, solubility and hygroscopicity, and is less toxic and irritating than glycerol. Propylene glycol is therefore widely recognized as a hygroscopic agent, antifreeze, lubricant and solvent in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
Introduction of Propylene De Glycol
Propylene de glycol is a colorless, odorless, viscous, transparent liquid that is an aliphatic mixture containing two hydroxyl groups. Since the two hydroxyl groups in the propylene glycol molecule can undergo chemical reactions, propylene glycol is an important chemical intermediate. 1 2 Propylene glycol has an extensive range of applications in many fields such as plastics, clothing, synthetic resins, cosmetics, and food. At the same time, Propylene de glycol can also be used as an antifreeze, deicing agent, heat transfer medium, liquid detergent, etc.
Wide Range of Applications for Propylene De Glycol
In Foodstuffs
1. In the food industry, Propylene de glycol reacts with fatty acids to form propylene glycol fatty acid esters, which serve as food emulsifiers.
2. Propylene de glycol has good solubility for food coloring and is non-volatile and inexpensive after addition. Therefore, it is an ideal
solvent for food coloring.
3. Food that contains propylene glycol is multiple. Propylene Glycol is broadly used in the manufacture of bread and cakes due to its emulsifying and wetting properties. In addition, owing to its emulsifying properties, the production time of bread can be shortened. When 1 2 propylene glycol is added to bread, it quickly absorbs moisture from the air, thus preventing the hardening of bread and cakes.
4. Propylene de glycol has the ability to sterilize, so it can be regarded as a preservative and sterilizer for canned fruits, jams, pickles, ham, and sausages.
In Industry
1. Propylene de glycol is also a suitable solvent for printing inks and epoxy resins. It is used as a plasticizer for alkyd resins and as an ink additive.
2. Propylene Glycol (PG) is mainly used to produce unsaturated polyester resins for surface coatings and glass fiber reinforcement.
3. Industrial Propylene Glycol plays the role of wetting agent and dissolving agent in chemistry and is a main ingredient in advanced antifreeze.
In the pharmaceutical industry
1. As a kind of solvent, Propylene de glycol plays an increasingly significant role in the production of injections, oral medicines, topical medicines, and oral hygiene products.
2. Propylene de glycol acts as a solvent for poorly soluble or water-soluble stable drugs to increase their stability and have quick-acting and prolonged-acting effects.
3. Propylene Glycol (PG) is suitable for making various ointments, solvents, softeners, and excipients of ointments.
In Summary
Propylene de glycol is a vital organic chemical with broad application prospects. With the progress of science and technology and the development of industry, it is believed that its application fields will continue to expand and deepen.
