Nonionic Surfactants Polysorbate Tween 20 In Cosmetics

Polysorbate tween 20 is a surfactant, a yellow or amber clear oily liquid with a special odor and a weak bitter taste. Its molecule contains more hydrophilic groups. It is miscible with water, ethanol, methanol and ethyl acetate, but insoluble in liquid paraffin, non-volatile oil and light petroleum. It can be used as emulsifier, dispersant, solubilizer, stabilizer and so on. What's more, it is stable and relatively non-toxic.

Tween 20 is an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifier, which can be used as solubilizer, diffusing agent, stabilizer, antistatic agent and lubricant, such as emulsifier for mineral oil, emulsifier for cosmetics, emulsifier for pharmaceuticals, co-solvent for dyestuffs, and stabilizer for foams, etc. It is usually used in combination with Span-20.

Polysorbates in food have emulsifying, dispersing and stabilizing effects.
Pharmaceutical applications
Polysorbate 20 is used as an excipient in pharmaceutical applications to stabilize emulsions and suspensions.
Industrial and household applications
Polysorbate 20 is used in many brands of baby wipes and is also used as a wetting agent in rubber balers in the elastomer industry.
