How To Correctly Understand Food Preservatives

Jul 24, 2020

According to the investigation, the use of food preservatives mainly has the following problems:

   (1) Excessive use

In order to cater to the misconception that the longer the shelf life, the better the food quality, some manufacturers use preservatives beyond the standard to extend the shelf life of the food. Some manufacturers have inadequate sanitation management and use excessive amounts of food in food processing. For example, mung bean cakes are easily deteriorated due to high water content, and excessive use of preservatives occurs from time to time, posing a threat to consumer health.

   (2) Illegal use

In order to keep the food fresh and sensory, some businesses disregard the health of consumers and use preservatives that are prohibited by the state. For example, the use of the country's banned "mold buster" for fillings, "hanging white block" for the pre-treatment of fruit jam, etc., seriously affect the health of consumers.

   (3) Use without marking

The state clearly stipulates that the food additives in food ingredients must be marked, and the prescribed name and type name shall be used. However, some businesses do not add preservatives to food labels, and some even use preservatives and promote "this product does not contain any preservatives" on the packaging to mislead and deceive consumers, which seriously violates consumers' right to know .

   (4) Over-range use

The national health standard GB2760 has made detailed regulations on the scope of use of preservatives. Some manufacturers have expanded the scope of use without authorization and regard preservatives as a panacea for food production and processing.
