Why Use [75% Alcohol] For Disinfection In Food Production?

Jun 08, 2020

The best concentration of alcohol for comprehensive sterilization is 75%

The strength of alcohol's sterilization and disinfection ability, and its concentration play a key role, too high or too low will not work, the best effect is 75%.

After testing, 75% alcohol can coagulate the proteins that make up the bacteria without forming a protective envelope that prevents the penetration of alcohol-killing factors. Therefore, the alcohol killing factor can continue to penetrate into the bacterial colony. The osmotic pressure of 75% alcohol is similar to that of the bacteria. It can gradually and continuously penetrate into the bacteria before the surface protein of the bacteria is denatured to reach the killing concentration. The dosage can dehydrate, deform and coagulate all bacterial proteins, and can also completely kill all bacteria in the outer, middle and inner layers, achieving the purpose and effect of thorough disinfection. Therefore, the optimal concentration of alcohol for disinfection should be 75%. The killing factor of alcohol can penetrate into the bacteria body, and can also penetrate into the deep inside of the bacterial colony. When it comes into contact with every bacteria, it will kill all of them. Use alcohol disinfectant scientifically and rationally.

3. How long can the sterilization effect be achieved with 75% alcohol?

Alcohol disinfection does not work immediately. For regular disinfection, keep it on your hands for at least 30 seconds and rub your hands back and forth (same as washing hands).

4. How long can one disinfection last?

Strictly speaking, it is usually disinfected once an hour. After a long time, the alcohol will evaporate and it will not be able to disinfect. Therefore, after the disinfection alcohol is prepared, it should be sealed and stored in a well-sealed bottle immediately for later use; the bottle cap should be closed immediately after use to prevent the concentration from being reduced due to volatilization, dust and other bacteria being contaminated, affecting sterilization effect. Alcohol is also more irritating, so mucous membrane disinfection should not be used.

5. How to configure 95% alcohol to 75% alcohol?

1. 100mL of 95% alcohol has 95mL of alcohol and 5mL of water. How much water should be added to make 75% alcohol?

95%*100 mL =75%*(X+5) mL, X=121.666666667 mL

Put 100 mL of 95% alcohol into a beaker, and then measure 121.7 mL of distilled water into the beaker and stir well to obtain 221.7 mL of 75% alcohol.

2. How much 95% alcohol should be used to make 100mL of 75% alcohol?

95%*X mL =75%*100 mL, X=78.947 mL, the amount of distilled water is 100-78.947 mL =21.053mL

That is, 78.9 mL of 95% alcohol is put into the beaker, and then 21.1 mL of distilled water is measured and poured into the beaker and stirred well to obtain 100 mL of 75% alcohol.
